Description

The Infrastructure and Transportation System Studio is a case study-based course that aims to develop students’ knowledge and skills in planning regional infrastructure and transportation development. This mandatory studio for second year urban and regional planning master students is a medium for them to practice theories and concepts acquired in the first year. The studio not only focuses on the substantive aspect of the plan but also focus on student skill development to work together in a team. This year, due to travel restrictions during COVID 19 pandemic, a new approach was introduced in terms of studio teaching methods and surveys. This includes changing teaching platforms to fully online where students were allowed to join studio from home and contributed in different ways to studio work.

Main objectives of this studio are by completion of the work, students: 1). Better understand theories, concepts, subject matter as well as cases of urban infrastructure and transportation system planning; 2). Having comprchcnsive capabilitics to explore and elaborate different types of information and knowledge relevant to planning and development objectives and accordingly the analytical methods; 3). Are capable to prepare planning recommendations to provide optimal solutions regarding problems analysed. This year, students explored different government regulations related planning and arrangements in anticipation to COVID 19 pandemic as well as elaborated how local governments have applied SDGs indicators and targets in development plans. The consequences on infrastructure planning were measured in ways they have/have not fulfilled development objectives. In this studio, students exercised Sustainable Infrastructure Framework as analytical framework which was considered as alternative planning methods and provided feedback regarding its feasibility as a planning approach. It is hoped that Infrastructure and Transportation System Studio of ITB and planning studio in general, not only act as a medium for academic and professional exercise, but also functions as a research centre for innovative development in infrastructure planning in Indonesia and beyond. The flexible and adaptive learning environment in planning studio open the opportunity for teachers and students to elaborate complex planning systems and theories as well as the implications and innovative solutions. In a broader context, planning studio links theoretical planning discourse and empirical evidence that unique for planning education and should be considered as a main contributor for planning theory enrichment and sustainable planning and development.
