Description
The year 2023 marked a milestone for Indonesian astronomy, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the iconic Bosscha Observatory and witnessing a Total Solar Eclipse over eastern Indonesia. These events underscored the significance of astronomy as a foundation of basic science and its interdisciplinary role within STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Recognizing the deep historical and cultural connections between humanity and celestial phenomena, an international symposium titled “From the Universe Back to Earth: Developing Astronomy to Meet Today’s Natural Challenges” was held at Institut Teknologi Bandung.
This book encapsulates the discussions and findings from the symposium, focusing on key themes such as the use of astronomical science to understand Earth systems, the Sun and space weather, data science applications, capacity building, and STEAM education strategies. It also highlights the revival of traditional astronomical wisdom to foster environmental awareness and humanity. By advocating for collaboration among diverse sectors, including governments, educational institutions, cultural groups, industries, and NGOs, the book emphasizes the potential of astronomy to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and sustainable development. This volume serves as both a philosophical and practical guide, offering insights into leveraging astronomy for environmental stewardship and advancing global sustainability goals.
